Workshop Alert: What does it mean to be a professional software developer?

ihub workshop

On Wednesday, March 9th, 2016, Finance in motion, in partnership with iHub will be running a workshop on what it means to be a professional software developer.

The purpose of the workshop is to provide a much needed reality check from the industry of what it reallyislike to be professional software developers. Too often is this view distorted by appealing images of cool coding gurus that can code Facebook in 1 month in alone in their bedroom while on a diet of pizza and red bull.
The concept is not that coding should be dull and boring, but that doing it in a professional environment can also be fun and, when good synergies are leveraged, wonderfully efficient and rewarding.
The workshop is structured on two pillars:
  1. The Management/Operational framework and
  2. The technical/tools framework
Topics in the first pillar include:
  • Software development process initiation: how to go from business need to a software product. Ownership of the process and business involvement.
  • Methodologies, processes and standards, the importance of having and sticking to them.
  • Quality Assurance. What is it and why it is much more than testing.
  • Innovation and idea generation: how to make sure that individual interests and curiosities are not only honed but also efficiently harvested.
  • Feedback cycles and overall communication strategy
Topics in the technical pillar are:
  • How to run an Agile shop
  • How’s our release process?
  • What are some of the tools we use?
  • Why do we write coding standards and what is written into it?
  • How do we incorporate new technologies in our products
